Biography:
Klinton Burgio-Ericson is an artist, art historian, and educator currently completing his doctorate in art history from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He specializes in the architecture and material culture of colonial Latin and Anglo-America, under the direction of Professors Eduardo de J. Douglas and Bernard L. Herman. His dissertation explores the significance of Spanish mission architecture in seventeenth-century New Mexico, focusing on the Purísima Concepción mission of Hawikku Pueblo as a case study in cultural encounter and architectural meaning.
Over the course of his graduate studies, Klinton has explored a broad range of art historical approaches and periods, and developed a methodological outlook drawing on the fields of anthropology, archaeology, material culture studies, and linguistics. In 2009, he wrote his Master’s Thesis on Hellenistic architectural sculpture under the direction of Professor Mary Sturgeon. This thesis analyzes the political implications of the relationship between Classical Greek votive relief sculptures and the second-century BC Telephos Frieze of the Pergamon Altar in Asia Minor. His research projects have included such diverse topics as Spanish and Native American architectural practices in Iberia, Mexico, the U.S. Southwest, and Piedmont Virginia; architectural theory and representation from the Medieval to Early Modern Periods; the expression of cultural meaning in physical landscapes and their painted representations; quilts; ceramics; early photography; and modernist painting in the U.S. Southwest. Graduate school allowed Klinton to develop a passion for teaching and gain broad experience as a Teaching Assistant and Instructor of Record over seven years. He has taught courses on Latin American, Western European, African, and Islamic art history, as well as studio drawing, painting, and participation in M.F.A. critiques. Throughout his graduate studies, Klinton continues to practice and exhibit as a visual artist. Among others, he has shown at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC; the Turchin Center for Visual Arts in Boone, NC; the Quincy Art Center in Quincy, IL; and as part of group shows in Japan and Boston, MA. He has exhibited often as a member of the Durham Art Guild and received awards from jurors such as Barkley Hendricks, Petah Coyne, Judy Chicago, and Linda Johnson Dougherty. Klinton grew up in the small Midwestern farming community of Funk, NE. He channeled his early interests in drawing through high school art classes and went on to obtain his Bachelors of Art degree from College of the Ozarks, located in Southwestern Missouri. His emphasis was painting, but he also explored sculpture and conceptual approaches, and studied English Literature and French. A year teaching conversational English in Marseille, France augmented Klinton’s education, allowing him to travel throughout Western Europe, visiting museum collections and cultural venues while refining his artistic vision. Upon returning to the United States, he moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he began his graduate work. Klinton is married to clinical researcher Laurel Burgio-Ericson, and is presently completing his dissertation as a Tyson Fellow in American Art at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, AR. |
